Salt in Salin de Giraud, Camargue

Alt Text

Kirsty Robertson: Salin de Giraud in Camargue, about an hour away from Arles, is where the salt panels for LUMA Arles were made. The salt used to be used for road treatments in the winter, but is now no longer used for that purpose and piles up instead. One of the brands - La Baleine - was familiar to us from Ontario. We had been eating the region's salt all along. But salt itself, which absorbs moisture from the air and doesn't burn, is fascinating. We had several conversations about whether or not salt could replace fire retardents in museums (but did not come to a conclusion). We were also all enamoured with the salt panels and door handles at LUMA Arles.
